This dog is the miniature version of the Greyhound and the Sloughi. It magnifies the fineness and elegance of their figures, and is augmented by its graceful movements and poses. It shows no signs of dwarfism. A model of grace and distinction, it however incarnates the essence of the hunting dog and the great hound dogs. Its typical function is to hunt rabbit and hare. The small hounds originated in the Nile Valley in ancient times, and later spread throughout the Mediterranean basin after the 5thcentury AD. It was the favorite of the Roman patricians initially and then of the nobility. It has always been considered a small "luxury dog" and this is the reason it has not spread more. Actually it is a sporting breed and has a great constitution, capable of remarkable speed (making records of 60 km/hr, for short distances). Its fragility is therefore only an appearance and, what is more, it proves to have a solid character, dignified, reflective, very affectionate, reserved with strangers. Classic, balanced gait.
